Abstract

Rabies is a mortal zoonotic disease, affecting more than 150 countries. Humans are accidentally affected after a rabid animal’s bite. In Morocco, rabies is a notifiable disease under program against rabies. The objective is to describe the epidemiological profile of human rabies in Morocco (2003-2012). A retrospective study was conducted with the collaboration of the Directorate of Epidemiology and Diseases Control of the Ministry of Health (MoH) in Morocco. All cases of rabies reported by the different districts to the MoH during the period from January 2003 to December 2012 were analyzed. A total of 212 rabies cases were reported during the study period. Male gender was predominant (81.6%). The median age was 24 years old; the most affected age group was that of 0-15yrs. The dog has been implicated in 85% of cases. All rabies cases died. The median incubation period was statistically different (p<0.001) according to area of bite 19 days, 41 days and 57 days for the head, the upper limb and lower limb, respectively. Rabies is still a serious zoonotic disease in Morocco that can be prevented by in time post-exposure vaccination and reinforced multisectoral coordination at national level.
